Self-storage is useful for everyone, but today I’d like to focus on the uses for small businesses. Whatever your small business does, maybe you’re a carpenter, or you have an online shop that sells handmade clothes, or you fix computers, there will be times when you have stock, parts or equipment that needs to be stored safely.

The options open to a small business owner are store the items at home, rent or buy a business premises, or rent self-storage. If you have a spare room in your house this is of course the cheapest and simplest option. The down side is you never get away from work, if your business takes over your home. Your family might not want your business taking over your home, which could lead to conflict. Sadly with house prices as high as they are not everyone has the luxury of spare room.

Safe Storage

The security of your belongings is very important if you’re running your own business. If you have stock or tools stolen your whole business stops functioning for a while, not only costing you to replace the stolen items, but also the work that would have happened in the weeks after the theft. You don’t want to let your customers down, as this can have a detrimental effect on the business in the future. It can become very expensive and stressful. Thieves tend to break into offices and warehouses out of hours, as they know they’re unlikely to be manned and there is usually computer equipment which is easy to take and sell on.

Secure and Clean

Self-storage units tend to be a lot more secure, as they’re designed to keep your possessions safe. With a perimeter fence, CCTV and secure, locked units (without breakable windows) they are a much safer option to store your business equipment. The other thing to consider is the conditions you’re keeping your items in. If you’re using storage for paperwork or stock that needs to be kept clean and dry it’s important to consider the condition of your storage solution. If you hire a cheap office or warehouse solution you can’t be sure it’ll be free of rodents, mould and other things that could damage your stock. A self-storage unit is kept clean and dry, and there are rules to stop people storing items such as food that might attract pests.

Food that’s not securely packed

You can’t keep food that might attract vermin. Food in a tin or hermetically sealed packaging is fine, but if rodents could smell it then you’re not allowed to store it. This is to protect our property, and the items stored in other storage containers. No-one wants rats or mice nibbling at their precious belongings.

Living creatures

I think this is quite obvious, a storage container isn’t a safe place to keep anything that’s alive. You can’t keep pets here – imagine if someone kept exotic spiders or snakes in their unit and they escaped – it would be chaos!

Anything illegal

Unsurprisingly, as we run an honest business we won’t allow you to store stolen goods or anything smuggled into the country!

Anything irreplaceable

Our storage units are secure, we have good locks, CCTV and a perimeter fence, but we don’t want to store anything that couldn’t be replaced. If you have deeds, securities, jewellery or anything of huge sentimental value it should probably be kept in a bank vault not a storage unit. You need to be sensible about how you store your items. Anything you wouldn’t store in your own home should be in a vault rather than a storage unit.

That’s it! I know that rules can be a bit boring, but these are sensible as they keep everyone safe. That way everyone can store their belongings securly, knowing they’re in good hands.

Hiding Gifts

OK so you can hide your gifts in the loft, shed on top of the wardrobe or under the bed, but self storage can be a game changer for making sure no-one finds your present stash. It depends what you’re trying to hide, for example hiding anything edible in the loft or shed is probably a bad idea. You don’t want to attract vermin to your home, and no-one will want a pre-nibbled gift. If you have small gifts then finding somewhere at home is probably not too difficult, but hiding that bike, scooter or surf board might be trickier! Kids are very curious and it can be hard to keep things a secret. If you hire a small room from us (or even a locker) you will be sure your gifts are away from prying eyes.

Make room for the tree

How often have you bought a Christmas tree that looks perfectly sensible in the shop, then found out it’s huge when it’s in your front room? It happens to all of us, you are judging the size of the tree in relation to it’s surroundings, so it looks smaller in a big garden centre or supermarket. If this has happened this year you may want to remove some of your furniture to make the room work with the tree in place. Of course you’re leaving the sofa and TV, but you might want to remove a bookcase or dresser to give you a bit more space. A small storage unit can give you the flexibility to remove your furniture temporarily, and return it after the festivities have finished.

You get better deals from your suppliers if you order in bulk, but renting a large premises just in case you have plenty of stock will cost a lot. Boxes

The first thing to think about when you’re packing things into boxes is getting the right sized box. If all of the items you’re storing are a similar weight you will probably be better off picking one size of box, this way your boxes will stack easily. If you have a variety of items you will need to think more carefully when buying boxes.

You don’t want to make a box too heavy to lift, more lighter boxes are quicker to load and unload, and your back will thank you later. This might mean you’re better off with some smaller boxes and some larger. Try to pack items so they can be handled easily, even if you have help when loading into your storage unit you don’t know what will happen when you come to collect your belongings.

Larger Furniture

If you have larger items to store like sofas, beds or other items of furniture these should also be protected. You can use mattress protectors and cheap sofa covers to protect these items from any dust or dirt. If you have other furniture items they can be wrapped in old sheets. Our storage facility is a clean place, but if things are being stored long term it makes sense to protect them from dirt or mould.

Items such as fridges, freezers and washing machines should be thoroughly dried out before storing. Unplug and disconnect them, clean and leave standing for several days before your move. The less damp you bring into your unit the better your belongings will store. If you’ve taken flat pack furniture apart it’s a good idea to put all of the nuts and bolts into an envelope which you can attach to the item of furniture. Electronic items will store more safely if you remove the batteries before you put them into suitable bags or boxes.
