New Year Goals – Self-storage Uses

Now that the twinkly lights of Christmas are fading into distant memory you might be thinking of the new challenges and opportunities 2025 might bring. Is your new year’s resolution to sort out your home, earn more money or get fit this year? Renting a self-storage unit might be a surprising way to help you to achieve your goals.

Declutter and Redecorate

If you’re thinking of renovating your home to make a fresh start, or get ready for something new, self-storage units can really help. When changing the layout or just refreshing the decor in your home it really helps to take as much of the furniture and belongings out of the space as you can. I’m sure you’ve seen those TV shows where they remove all of someone’s stuff from their home, then redecorate and only return a fraction of it to the newly decorated home. Do you wish this could happen to your home? You don’t need the flashy team and cameras to make a big change.

If you feel you’d really benefit from decluttering why not take all of the furniture from one room (or even one floor) to a storage unit. Then you have time to redecorate the space and think about how it’s used, maybe without everything there you can see a better use of the space. You can then go through the items in storage, working out which you need to keep, which should be thrown away, or sold or donated to charity. You might need the help of friends or family to ensure you don’t bring all of your clutter back home again! It’s a really positive process. You will be rewarded with a clean, fresh home that’s no longer over cluttered. And if you’ve sold or donated items you can feel good about them as well.

Start Your Own Business

Another opportunity that the start of the year might have inspired is the possibility of a ‘side-hustle’. This is a term that originated in Asia, and just means having a small second job, which is usually your own business that you run from home. These businesses are generally never meant to be the main source of income. They’re just a top-up to help to pay for life’s luxuries or to help out other family members. You could be saving up for a trip of a lifetime or have a child about to go to university, a little extra cash is always useful!

Quite often these businesses are online shops selling items that can be easily stored and shipped. This is where it’s useful to have a small storage unit. At the very beginning it’s ok to have your stock in the spare bedroom. As the business grows or when you’d like to have family or friends to stay you will want to find somewhere else to keep your precious stock. It needs to be safe and secure, so a storage unit will be a better option than a shed or garage, where you could have problems with pests or mould. Storage units are very flexible, as you can have one for just a month if you find demand is up, or you need the space in your home.

Get Fit

How can a storage unit help to achieve the goal of keeping fit? A lot of people buy fitness equipment and new bikes in January to keep fit, then they realise how much space these things take up in their homes! They tend to end up as an unconventional clothes airer or the place the cat likes to rest…not much exercise happening there.

Removing stored Christmas decorations or the contents of your garage could free up space that you can use as a gym. Making a dedicated gym area means your gym equipment won’t get used for hanging clothes on, and it will motivate you to use it more.
